HOLBERT PLACES THIRD AT NAVY MEN'S GYMNASTICS OPEN
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Jan. 16, 2007Â - Junior Derrick Holbert (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led the Dukes with a third-place finish in the all-around (41.65) at the men's gymnastics Navy Open Saturday afternoon. Holbert placed in the top ten three times finishing eighth in the horizontal bar (7.20), ninth in the floor exercise (7.70) and tenth in the vault (8.05). JMU posted a top team score of 32.90 on the vault led by freshman Travis Eiler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) who placed fifth on the vault with a score of 8.75. Sophomore Stirling Van Winkle (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) had the highest finish for the Dukes with a second place showing on the pommel horse with a score of 7.95. Sophomore Patrick Bookjans (Gottmadingen, Germany/Friedrich-Woehler) led the Dukes on the parallel bars scoring a 6.60. Freshman Dan Grant (Memphis, Tenn./Graigmont) also competed for the Dukes and scored a 6.25 on pommel horse to give him a 15th place finish. Navy won the event with a score of 194.05, followed by William and Mary with a score of186.65. The Dukes finished their first meet of the season with a team score of 159.25 to place third. The Dukes will be back on the road on Jan. 21 at Temple. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. | |||
