HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Down to eight available players, James Madison men's basketball battled, but fell short against Southern Miss, 73-65, on Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.

JMU (11-12, 4-7 Sun Belt) used a 13-2 run to take a 43-42 lead in the second half, but Southern Miss (12-12, 6-6 SBC) countered with a 14-3 run of its own and was able to hold on for the victory, snapping a five-game losing streak.

The Golden Eagles finished 28-of-34 (.824) from the free-throw line and shot 45.7 percent, as Tylin Weeks led USM with 28 points and made 14 free throws.

Bradley Douglas and
Cliff Davis led the Dukes with 18 points each.
Eddie Ricks III and
Christian Brown each corralled six rebounds to lead JMU, which finished with 11 turnovers and shot just 4-of-20 (.200) from behind the arc.

How It Happened
First Half: Southern Miss 29, James Madison 21
- Southern Miss led in the opening minutes as a three from Fallou Diagne gave the Golden Eagles a 22-16 lead at the under-8 media timeout.
- Preston Fowler hit a layup to cut JMU's deficit to 24-21, but it would be the final points for the Dukes in the final five minutes as Southern Miss went into the locker room with an eight-point lead.

Second Half: Southern Miss 73, James Madison 65
- JMU trailed by 10 (40-30) early in the half, but the Dukes went on a 13-2 run to take a 43-42 lead with just over 10 minutes left.
- The Golden Eagles countered with a 14-3 run to go back ahead by double digits (56-46) with six minutes left.
- Southern Miss finished the game at the free-throw line to snap its five-game losing streak.
