JMU WRESTLING PICKS UP FIRST CAA WIN OF THE SEASON

FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 20, 2007 ? James Madison University fell to nationally-ranked Hofstra 34-12 before rebounding to defeat Wagner 45-4 in the second day of the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Duals on Saturday at George Mason University.
JMU picked up its first CAA win of the season and currently sits at 6-16 overall and 1-5 in conference meets. Hofstra, which entered the weekend ranked sixth in the USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association/Intermat Division I rankings, currently sits at 14-2-3 overall and 6-0 in the CAA. The Pride went 5-0 in the duals to run its consecutive CAA victories streak to 53. Wagner is 0-12 overall and 0-7 in the CAA.
The Dukes earned a pair of victories against the Pride. Hofstra won the first five bouts before senior Jeff Jacobs (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) won by forfeit at 165 pounds. Freshman Ivan Lagares (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) followed with the lone head-to-head win for JMU with a pin of Rich Muzikar in 2:22. That pulled JMU within 21-12, but Hofstra took the last three weight classes for the 34-12 triumph.
The final match of the duals saw the Dukes take command with the first three matches and go on to cruise with wins in the final six. Sophomore Scott Yorko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and freshman John Holloway (Derwood, Md./Magruder) each recorded falls for the Dukes at 157 and 197 pounds respectively.
Sophomores Thang Ho (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) and Shawn Horst (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) each earned their first wins of the season, both by 7-4 decisions, at 125 and 141 pounds. Junior Brandon Luce (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) won by medical forfeit at 133 pounds while freshman Patrick Finch (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) improved to 3-0 for the weekend with an 8-5 decision at 285. Jacobs, Lagares, and junior Dan Rafeedie (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) each won by forfeit.
JMU will return to Memorial Hall for a 7:30 p.m. home match on Saturday against Franklin and Marshall College.
