HARRISONBURG, Va., March 17, 2007 -- James Madison junior Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) won men's compound world archery title at the Indoor World Championships, which concluded Saturday at the International Izmir Fair Center in Turkey.
He was also a member of the gold-medal U.S. men's compound team, which included Dave Cousins and Reo Wilde. The team shot a world-record 239 (out of a possible 240) in the semifinal round.
In the individual gold-medal match Gellenthien beat Jose Duo of Spain 116-114, and that two-point victory was the largest for Gellenthien in the five rounds of competition.
He opened by tying Emre Ozdemir of Turkey 116-116 in the round of 32 and advanced on the tie-breaker. In the round of 16 Gellenthien tied Anders Malm of Sweden 116-116, again advancing on the tie-breaker. In the quarterfinals he edged U.S. teammate Reo Wilde 119-118 and followed that with a tight 118-117 semifinal win over Dominique Genet of France.
The U.S. team beat France 232-230 in the gold-medal team match. The teams were tied 58-58 after the first six arrows, then France took a 117-116 lead after 12 arrows. The U.S. came back to tie France 174-174 after 18 arrows and outscored France 58-56 in the final six arrows.
The Americans beat Australia 234-232 in the quarterfinals and set a world record of 239 in their 239-233 semifinal victory over The Netherlands.
