LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman
Bria Byrd placed 19th in the long jump with an effort of 6.05m (19-10.25) at the NCAA East First Round on Thursday evening at the UK Outdoor Track & Field Complex.

Maeva Tahou of Charleston Southern earned the top mark at 6.51m (21-4.25), while Princeton's Georgina Scoot claimed the final qualifying spot for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a leap of 6.22m (20-5).

Byrd's 19th-place finish is the highest by a JMU long jumper at the regional in program history. Additionally, the Norfolk, Va. native became the first Duke to qualify for the event since Ebony Owusu-Sampah did so in 2015.

The freshman concludes her strong season ranking No. 2 in the indoor long jump (6.09m (19-11.75)) and the outdoor long jump (6.30 (20-8)) in the JMU record book.

Byrd will join fellow freshman
Mykenzie Britton (400m) and
Sky Bleu Tyson (400H) next month for the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships. The action takes place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., June 18-19.
