HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 10, 2008 ? Six players registered at least seven kills as a balanced attack led James Madison past UNC Wilmington 3-2 in Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball action Friday night at Hanover Hall.
JMU improved to 8-12 overall and 2-2 in the CAA while defeating UNCW (5-12, 0-4 CAA) by set scores of 26-28, 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, and 16-14.
Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs for the Dukes. Senior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) had nine kills and a season-high seven blocks. Freshman Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) tallied eight kills and 18 digs while sophomore Kay Weninger (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) and senior Kelsey McNamara (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) each had eight kills and eight digs. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa) also had a double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Sofia Lindroth (Edwards Colo./Battle Mountain) matched her career high with 23 digs.
Lindsey Strucko had a double-double for UNCW with 14 kills and 16 digs along with three aces. Kelsey Bendig also had a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs. Megan Nash added 10 kills while Jacqueline Crane totaled 21 assists and eight digs. Ashlyn Morris posted a match high 25 digs.
In the first set, JMU vaulted out to a huge lead at 9-2, only to see UNCW counter quickly and close it to 10-9. The Dukes kept a tight lead until the Seahawks tied it at 20-20. Wilmington then grabbed its first lead at 22-21. The Seahawks held the first set point at 24-23 before a Johnson kill kept the set alive. Finally, UNCW broke a 26-26 tie with a Paula McConnell kill and a JMU attack error sealed the win.
Wilmington led for the early part of set two when JMU went on a five-point run to grab a 14-12 lead. The lead stayed tight at one or two points until the Dukes pulled away from a 21-20 edge with the final four points, three on UNCW attack errors, the final one on a block by Wall and Johnson.
