NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 21, 2008 ? James Madison hit .337 as a team, its second-best attack percentage of the season, while sweeping Norfolk State 3-0 in non-conference women's volleyball on Tuesday night at Gill Gymnasium.
JMU improved to 11-13 overall while defeating NSU by set scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-18. The Dukes won for the fourth time in their last five matches. It was the first three-set victory since Sept. 13 against both St. Francis (N.Y.) and Morgan State. The Spartans fell to 7-20.
The .337 attack percentage (42-12-89) marked just the second time this season hitting over .300. The only better mark came against St. Francis when the Dukes hit at a .367 clip. It was also a high mark for the season for kills in a three-set match.
Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) hit .333 with 14 kills in 27 attempts and five errors with seven digs and two blocks. Freshman Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) had five kills on six swings (.833) and two blocks. JMU split the setter duties for the first time this season. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) posted 20 assists in two sets while sophomore backup setter Lauren Fanelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) played the third set at libero with 12 assists.
Elayne Greer led Norfolk State with 10 kills. Solange Honore and Nicole Kessner each had 13 assists in the match.
In the first set, JMU pulled away from a 4-4 tie and claimed 10 of the next 14 points. The Dukes continued to gradually pull away and led 23-13 before the Spartans went on a 6-1 run to pull within five. JMU got the set point on a NSU attack error for the win. Callahan and sophomore Kay Weninger (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) each had four kills.
JMU led from start to finish in the second set, quickly building an 8-3 lead and expanding to a 16-6 advantage. NSU got as close as four at 24-20 before a service error clinche
