WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Oct. 24, 2008 ? Erin Skipper and Ginny Bray combined to hit .500 with 23 kills to lead William & Mary over James Madison 3-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball match on Friday night at Kaplan Arena.
W&M won by set scores of 28-26, 25-14, and 25-23. The Tribe upped its record to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the CAA, maintaining a tie for second place. The Dukes fell to 11-14 overall and 4-4 in the conference after entering the weekend in a four-way tie for fourth.
Skipper led the Tribe with 13 kills and a .480 attack percentage, totaling just one error on 25 swings. Bray added 10 kills and .529 hitting with one error on 17 attempts. Lauren Powell had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while Kim Mount also had a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs.
Freshman Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) hit .450 with a team-high 11 kills for JMU. Senior Kelsey McNamara (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) had 10 kills and four digs. Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had 11 digs and five kills, marking just the second time in the last 14 matches she has totaled fewer than 10 kills. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) accumulated 27 assists and eight digs while sophomore Sofia Lindroth (Edwards, Colo./Battle Mountain) led all players with 16 digs.
JMU appeared to take charge early in the first set, mounting a 7-0 run led by four kills from McNamara to take a 10-4 lead. The Dukes continued to build on the lead and held a 15-8 advantage after three of Callahan's five kills on the night. However, W&M started its comeback by posting seven of the next nine points to pull within two at 17-15. The Tribe tied the score at 21-21 and took their first lead at 23-22. JMU held three consecutive set points, but two were thwarted by Skipper kills and the third by Powell for a 26-26 tie. A JMU attack error and another Skipper kill clinch the W&M win, 28-26. She had eight kills in the first set while McNamara had seven.
