RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 25, 2008 ? Ivana Rich and Elisa Kuehnel each had 10 kills to lead Virginia Commonwealth past James Madison 3-0 on Saturday night in a Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball match at the Siegel Center.
The Rams won by set scores of 25-16, 25-16, and 26-24 as VCU improved to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in the CAA. JMU fell to 11-15 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Rich posted her 10 kills on 16 swings for a .625 attack percentage for the match. Kuehnel hit .250 and added five digs. Cat Juson and Lenka Melicharkova each had 17 assists while splitting the setter duties while Juson added nine digs. Laryssa Goncalves tallied a match-high 16 digs.
For JMU, freshman Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) had 17 kills, her second-highest of the season, while hitting .324 and posting five digs and two blocks. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) picked up 28 assists and seven digs.
VCU led from start to finish in the first set, hitting a match-best .333 as a team while the Dukes were held to .075 hitting. The Rams jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and continued to build the advantage to 14-6. JMU made a modest run to cut it to 16-12, but VCU went back out in front 21-13 and closed out the set on a Kuehnel kill.
JMU had a 5-0 run in the second set to take a 9-5 lead, but VCU charged back to record an 11-2 run and grab a 16-11 advantage. The Rams closed the match on a six-point run for the 25-16 win.
The third set was a different story with 20 ties and eight lead changes. VCU appeared to finally break the stalemate with a 5-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. Trailing 17-13, JMU responded with a 5-0 run of its own to go in front 18-17. Neither team went ahead by more than one point until Kuehnel broke a 24-24 tie with consecutive kills for the 26-24 set win to clinch the match.
