HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 31, 2008 ? Hofstra rallied from a late fourth-set deficit to clinch a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball win over James Madison on Friday night at the Hofstra Physical Fitness Center.
Hofstra won its fourth straight to improve to 14-11 overall and 6-3 in the CAA. JMU dropped its third straight match, all in conference, to fall to 11-16 overall and 4-6 in the league. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, and 26-24.
James Madison opened the fourth set on an 8-0 run thanks to three aces by senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep). Hofstra eventually tied the set at 14-14, but the Dukes regained control at 20-16. A quick three-point burst put the Pride back in the race. Then trailing 24-22 and facing set point, HU went on a four-point run to clinch the match, the final three points all on blocks that included Stephanie Killins.
Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) led the Dukes with a double-double with 19 kills, 10 digs, and five blocks. Freshman Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) hit .444 with 10 kills. Senior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) accumulated 10 kills, seven digs, and five blocks. Miles posted 47 assists. Sophomore Sofia Lindroth (Edwards, Colo./Battle Mountain) tallied 15 digs while freshman Leanna Heston (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added 14 in her most extensive action of the season. She had eight digs for the season entering the match.
Lauren Engle led the Pride with 19 kills and six digs. Two players posted double-doubles with Harmonie Calinda contributing 13 kills and 12 digs and Monica Knight adding 11 kills and 13 digs. Sarah Lopez picked up 38 assists.
Hofstra jumped in front quickly in the first set 6-1, but JMU fought its way back to a tie at 11-11. The Pride led by one or two points for most of the set before the Dukes tied it at 22-22. However, HU scored the final three points with the set-winning kill by Engle.
