HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 3, 2008 ? After James Madison took the first set, Northeastern stormed back to claim the next three for a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association volleyball decision on Friday night in Sinclair Gymnasium.
NU improved to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in the CAA while JMU fell to 7-11 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Huskies topped the Dukes by set scores of 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, and 25-22.
Senior Brianna Seitz led Northeastern with a double-double of 17 kills and 10 digs while also hitting.484 with four blocks. Senior Lauren DeTurk also registered a double-doduble with 12 kills and 13 digs. Junior Jessica Tkachuk tallied 41 assists and five blocks at the setter position while junior libero Leah Neubeck collected 17 digs.
For JMU, sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) matched her season high with 19 kills along with 10 digs. Freshman Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) also had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) posted 41 assists, seven digs, five kills, and two blocks.
The key stretch of the first set came with the Dukes trailing 8-5. Sophomore Kay Weninger's (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) kill ignited a 13-5 run by JMU to turn a 8-5 deficit into a 18-13 advantage. The run started with four straight points and ended with a 7-1 run with Miles and Callahan at serve. The Dukes hit .256 in the opener.
Set two was a quick reversal of fortune as JMU led 5-3 when the Huskies got a kills by senior Sarah Stein to take serve. Stein proceeded to serve NU on a 7-0 run from which it would never look back. JMU got no closer than four the rest of the way before NU pulled away from a 19-13 lead with a 6-0 run to close the set. The Huskies hit .357 compared to .077 for the Dukes.
