HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 4, 2008 ? Juniors Harmonie Calinda and Monica Knight combined for 41 kills and 35 digs to lead Hofstra past James Madison 3-2 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball match on Saturday evening in Sinclair Gymnasium.
Hofstra improved to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the league by defeating JMU, 7-12 overall and 1-2 CAA, by set scores of 26-24, 21-25, 25-20, 22-25, and 15-13. The Dukes are now 1-4 this season in five-set matches.
Knight's double-double consisted of 21 kills and 16 digs with two aces while Calinda's evening included 20 kills and 19 digs. The Pride added two more double-doubles with junior setter Chrissey Cruz tallying 54 assists and 12 digs while senior Lauren Engle contributed 12 kills and 11 digs.
JMU had three double-doubles in the match led by freshman Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) with a career-high 18 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) added 13 kills and 17 digs. Senior setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) had a season-high 54 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore libero Sofia Lindroth (Edwards, Colo./Battle Mountain) accumulated 23 digs.
In the decisive fifth set, Hofstra used a 6-1 run midway through to turn a 7-7 tie into a 13-8 lead for the Pride. HU held match point at 14-9 when JMU made a push to get back in the match on a four-point run, aided by two kills and a block from freshman Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central). With the Dukes within one at 14-13, Knight put down a kill for the game winner.
Set one was the tightest of the match, featuring 10 ties and five lead changes. Neither team gained an advantage of more than three. Hofstra held set point at 24-22, but Callahan and senior Kelsey McNamara (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) registered consecutive kills to tie it at 24-24. However, a service error and attack error on the ensuing plays gave the set to Hofstra.
