TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 20, 2008 ? Marcela Gurgel had 15 kills and 10 digs to lead South Florida past James Madison in the finale of the Best Western Invitational hosted by South Florida on Saturday evening.
USF (9-5) defeated JMU (5-10) by set scores of 25-22, 26-24, and 25-17. The Dukes went 1-3 in the tournament.
Mariana Thon of South Florida was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined by Gurgel, JMU sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown), Kassie Kadera and Amber DeWeerdt of Toledo, Chelsea Ono Horn of Harvard, and Cristin Haines of Georgia Southern.
In addition to Gurgel's double-double, Nakia Williams had eight kills for the Bulls. Thon had 27 assists, five digs, four blocks, and three kills.
Callahan had 14 kills and hit .310 with seven digs for JMU. Senior Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) had 27 assists and five digs. Sophomore Sofia Lindroth (Edwards, Colo./Battle Mountain) posted 12 digs.
JMU will be at Maryland-Baltimore County in a non-conference match on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
