MACON, Ga., Oct. 5, 2009 -- The James Madison women's golf team carded a 311 in Monday's second round to finish seventh out of 12 teams at the Eat-A-Peach Mercer Invitational in Macon, Ga. The 78th-ranked Dukes shot a 305 on Sunday to finish the 36-hole event with a 616.
Leading the way for JMU were junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) and sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) who tied for 17th after each shot a 75-77=152. Sakamoto has finished in the top 20 in each of Madison's four events this season, including three top-10 finishes, while Gunnarsson has posted back-to-back top-20 finishes for the second time in her career.
Junior Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) fell into a tie for 26th after carding an 80 on Monday. Mesa shot a 74 in Sunday's opening round to finish at 10-over-par.
Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) tied for 40th after shooting an 81-77=158, while sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montana) carded an 81-81=162 to tie for 50th.
Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora fired Monday's low round, duplicating the 2-under-par, 70 she shot on Sunday, to hold off Furman's Stefanie Kenoyer for the tournament's individual championship. Zamora carded a 4-under-par, 140, while Kenoyer finished at 2-under-par (71-71=142). Coastal Carolina's Aruka Felgueroso (71-76=147) and Georgia State's Cathrine Madsen (72-75=147) tied for third, with Furman's Alexa Rancourt (74-74=148) rounding out the top five.
No. 6 Georgia overcame a 10-shot deficit to No. 8 Florida State to take the team championship. The Bulldogs edged the Seminoles by one stroke after carding a 298-301=599. FSU (288-312=600) tied with Furman (300-300=600) for second, while Coastal Carolina (297-309=606) finished fourth and Georgia State (309-298=607) took fifth.
The Dukes are off for two weeks before traveling to Greenville, N.C. to play in the East Carolina Lady Pirate Invitational Oct. 19-20.
