CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla., Mar. 13, 2009 ? The James Madison women's golf team moved up one spot to finish the EKU-El Diablo Invitational into a tie for second on Friday. The Dukes shot a 308, the low-round on the day, to make up a five-stroke difference and tie Florida Atlantic for second place.
Leading the way for Madison was sophomore Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) in a tie for fifth. Mesa carded a 74 on Friday to go with a pair of 76's on Thursday to finish at 226. Freshman Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Columbia/Gimasio La Montana) record her first-career top-10 finish, after shooting a 78 on Friday. She shot rounds of 71 and 80 on Thursday to card a 229.
Sophomores Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) tied for 17th (83-79-75?237) and 31st (80-81-81?242) respectively.
Freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) rounded out the Dukes' five-player team in a tie for 38th (76-82-86?244).
Ball State won the team championship after carding rounds of 304, 301 and 309 for a 914. Florida Atlantic (300-314-313?927) tied the Dukes for second, ahead of Indianapolis (322-305-310?937) in fourth and St. John's (315-319-316?950) in fifth.
FAU's Praewnapa Phol-Uayporn (68-71-74?213) took the tournament's individual championship. Ball State's Kristy O'Connor (77-69-77?223) finished in second, followed by Sarah Prascsak (77-73-74?224) of Indianapolis in third, Renee Cloutier (74-82-69?225) of St. John's in fourth and Mesa and Radford's Hannah Coles (75-78-73?226) in fifth.
