CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 12, 2009 ? Northwestern hit .330 as a team and faced just four lead changes in a 3-0 volleyball sweep of James Madison on Saturday morning in the Comfort Suite 49er Tournament at Halton Arena.
NU improved to 5-3 overall, winning by set scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-19. JMU dropped to 4-5 after losing its second straight three-set match following a three-game winning streak.
“We did some good things against Northwester,” stated head coach Disa Garner. “We just missed some block assignments. But we had some pretty good performances and kept them on their heels. We fought back and played hard in some of the rallies. We had a lot to work with from that match. We were a different team from last night and can build on what we did today.”
Sabel Moffett led all players with 14 kills and .550 hitting along with five blocks for the Wildcats. Naomi Johnson had 11 kills and four blocks. Ariel Baxterbeck hit .500 with nine kills and six digs. Elyse Glab tallied 39 assists while Kate Nobilio totaled 15 digs.
Junior right side Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) was the lone JMU player in double figures with 10 kills, six digs, and two blocks. Freshman outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) posted eight kills and nine digs. Junior Lauren Fanelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) accumulated 25 assists and six digs.
NU claimed the early momentum in the first set, grabbing leads of 5-0 and 8-2. JMU redshirt freshman Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took serve with the Dukes trailing 14-10 and put up five straight points to move the Dukes in front 15-14. However, the Wildcats posted five of the next six points to move back in front for good at 19-16. JMU pulled within a point twice, but a Baxterbeck kill ended the set at 25-22.
The teams were tied four times through the early part of the second set.>
