ROCK HILL, S.C., Sept. 18, 2009 ? James Madison fought back from a 2-1 deficit to take the final two sets for a 3-2 win over Gardner-Webb and earn a split on the opening day of the Wingate Inn Classic at Winthrop.
Â
JMU (5-7) defeated GWU (4-8) by set scores of 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21, and 15-12. The victory snapped a four-match losing streak, which was set earlier in the day as JMU fell to Georgia Southern 3-0 by set scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-20.
Â
JMU head coach Disa Garner said of the performance, "Tonight we had a slow start, but we manipulated the lineup a little with Holly at libero and Lindsay on the outside. It proved to be a solid lineup for us. We relaxed too much at the beginning and made some errors. But in the fourth set we put it together and started playing aggressively and not making our own errors. The big thing was our blocking. We had five blocks going into the fourth game. We had some big blocks in the last two [to finish with a total of 12 for the match]. The biggest thing tonight was that even though we didn't play well throughout, we enjoyed it and kept our act together before picking it up in the final two sets to pick up the win."
Â
Freshman setter Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) had her second double-double in her last three matches with 47 assists and 10 digs. Fellow freshman Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) matched her career-high with 17 kills and just missed her fifth double-double with nine digs. Middle blocker Haley Jacobsen (Winchester, Va./Sherando) added to the freshman impact with season highs of four kills and a match-high seven blocks.
Â
Junior right side Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had a season-high 15 kills along with six digs and four blocks. Sophomore middle Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) added 10 kills and five digs. Sophomore outside hitter Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) had a season high with 14 digs and matched her career high with four aces.
