CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 12, 2009 ? James Madison claimed the opening set, but Presbyterian College responded with wins in each of the next three in a 3-1 triumph to close the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament on Saturday evening in Charlotte's Halton Arena.
Â
PC won by set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-20, and 26-24 to improve to 4-6. JMU dropped to 4-6 with its third straight setback.
Â
"We played pretty well throughout," stated JMU head coach Disa Garner. "We had a big passing breakdown in the second set. But we really played hard through the next two sets. We miscued on a few plays that we needed to come through on. PC played amazing defense and came up with a ton of digs. We were swinging really hard. Without having our regular lineup in there, I thought we played hard, and we'll look to build on this heading into next weekend."
Â
Lisa Shelley led all players with 16 kills and added 10 digs for the double-double. Presley Mabrey hit .385 with 13 kills and six digs while Amanda Kettles posted 10 kills and five blocks. Kilee Ruppe also had a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs. Elizabeth Heineman and Ashley Dunlap tallied 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
Â
Junior middle blocker Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) led JMU with 11 kills on .409 hitting. Freshman outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had her fourth double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Fellow freshman Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) had her first career double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs along with three aces. Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) added nine kills and six blocks.
Â
"At the end of the fourth set we had to change up the lineup with some injuries. We weren't at our strongest. Jess came up with some big numbers offensively and Turner blocked a bunch of balls. Lindsay was really solid. Megan set this round and she really learned a lot and made some good decisions. She showed progress running the offense."
