CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Sept. 18, 2010 - Sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) recorded a pair of double-doubles to lead the Dukes to victories over Belmont and Chattanooga and claim tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the Country Inn & Suites Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Saturday.
JMU beat Belmont 3-2 with set scores of 25-22, 20-25, 28-26, 15-25 and 15-13 before finishing off the tournament sweep with a 3-0 win over Chattanooga with set scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-14.
The Dukes have won seven of their last eight matches and improved to 10-3 on the season. Belmont dropped to 5-9 and Chattanooga to 4-10.
This was the third tournament championship the Dukes have won this season after claiming the Coca-Cola Classic and JMU Days Inn Invitational in Harrisonburg earlier this season.
Erb was named MVP after finishing the two-day event with 51 kills, 35 digs, nine service aces and six blocks. On Saturday, she recorded her third 20-kill performance of the season finishing with 20 kills and 11 digs against Belmont. She capped her performance with 15 kill, 12 dig showing against the Mocs. It was her sixth double-double of the season and the 15th of her career.
Joining Erb on the All-Tournament team were senior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) and redshirt sophomore Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity). Â Erb was named MVP at a tournament for the second time this season, while Callahan has been All-Tournament three times.
Against Belmont, five different players had at least six kills led by Erb's 20. Callahan had 10 and a team-high 17 digs while Abel and junior Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) finished with nine and eight kills respectively. Senior Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) had six kills and a team-best five blocks. Sophomore Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) was the third Duke with a double-double as she finished with 41 assists and 12 digs.
