CINCINNATI, Ohio, Sept. 4, 2010 - Senior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) and sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) each recorded double-doubles to lead James Madison volleyball to a thrilling five-set victory over Kent State and help the Dukes salvage a split in the Cincinnati Bearcats Invitational on Saturday.
JMU won by set scores of 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-13 over Kent State. Earlier in the day, Madison lost to Cincinnati 3-0 by set scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-17.
The split moved the Dukes record to 4-2 overall. KSU dropped to 4-3 while Cincinnati went 3-0 in its own tournament to improve to 6-1.
The performance by Callahan and Erb was the first time two JMU players recorded double-doubles in the same game since the duo did it last November against Towson. Erb finished with 20 kills for the second time in the last four games, while Callahan added 17 kills. Both finished with 13 digs.
Prior to this season, the last time a Madison player recorded twenty kills in a match was Allyson Halls (2004-07) in 2007.
Against Kent State, the Dukes were outhit .130 to .104 but used 65 kills to KSU's 47 to pick up the win. The Golden Flashes held a 11 to seven edge in blocks and 78-75 advantage in digs.
Joining the attack for JMU was junior Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) with nine kills in 28 attempts on her way to being named to the All-Tournament team. Fellow junior Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) chipped in with eight kills on .111 hitting. Freshman Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) finished with a team-high 17 digs in just her fourth career appearance. Senior Lauren Fanelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and sophomore Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) combined for 54 assists, 12 digs and a kill.
Meredith Paskert led the Kent State attack with 17 kills on .297 hitting while adding eight digs and a service ace. Liva Brivule had 14 kills and Maigan Larsen had a match-high 26 digs and was third on the team with nine kills. Zuz
