RALEIGH, N.C., March 13, 2011 – The James Madison softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Wolfpack Challenge to finish the five-game, three-day tournament with a 2-3 record. JMU defeated Maine 11-4 in game one before falling 8-4 to tournament-host North Carolina State 8-4 in game two.
The Dukes finished the week with a 4-3 record and ran their record to 13-7 overall. The Black Bears dropped to 8-19 while the Wolfpack improved to 11-10.
In game two, N.C. State hit three home runs, including two in a four-run fourth, to power past JMU.
Freshman right-hander Brittany Jeans (Camano Island, Wash./Stanwood) conceded four runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief to take the loss and drop to 2-4. She relieved sophomore Cara Stecher (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) who gave up one unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out two in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
Kayla Cox allowed one run on four hits and a walk in four innings of relief to earn her sixth win of the season. The right-hander struck out five in relief of Morgan Peeler to improve to 6-5.
Junior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and senior catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) each homered for the Dukes in the loss. Spitzer went 1-for-1 with her second home run of the season and the 14th of her career. Burnham finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.
Third baseman Bridgette Desbois went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and catcher Alyssa Allbritten added two hits, including a home run, two runs and two RBIs in three at-bats to lead N.C. State. Designated player Bethaney Wells and shortstop Breanna Andrews each added home runs and combined for three RBIs and two runs scored
Burnham gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead in the first at-bat of the game as she hit her second lead-off home run of the weekend and the third of her career. It was the junior's fifth home run of the season and the 16th of her career, tying her for third on the school's all time list with Jenn Chavez (2005-08).
The Wolfpack responded with four runs on a pair of two-run blasts in the bottom of the third inning. Center fielder Landon Warren led off the frame with an infield single. Jeans retired the next two batters she faced before Allbritten drove a pitch out to center field for the 2-1 lead. Desbois kept things going with a single through the right side before Wells capped the inning with a two-run shot to left-center.
JMU took advantage of a pair of walks and a N.C. State error to get within one in the fourth inning. Junior second baseman
