HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 13, 2011 – Freshman midfielder Ysaline Nobels (Dion-Valmont, Belgium/College du Christ-Roi) scored 2:12 into the first overtime to lift the James Madison field hockey team to a 2-1 sudden-victory win over Radford at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Tuesday night.Â
JMU won its first overtime game since defeating Northeastern 3-2 on Nov. 1, 2009 to lift its record to 2-3. Radford lost for just the second time this season, dropping to 4-2.Â
"We're excited about the win," head field hockey coach Antoinette Lucas said. "We have some things to work on, but we fought to the end. Overall, I'll say that we'll take the win and move on to the next one."Â
Nobels game-winner was her first career goal. She led the team with five shots, but the winner was her only one to reach goal. Redshirt sophomore forward Courtney Versfeld (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent) added her first goal of the season while junior Jenna Taylor (Midlothian, Va./James River) and freshman Taylor Bailey (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) had assists.Â
RU's Melissa Register led the Highlander offense with an unassisted goal on three shots. Marlee Schramm chipped in with three shots, including one on goal while Ellie Staples added two shots on net.Â
Senior goalkeeper Margo Savage (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) made seven saves while limiting Radford to one goal to earn the win. She improved to 1-2 on the season while lowering her goals against average to 2.12.Â
Sidney Encarnacion allowed two goals and made eight saves to take the loss and drop to 3-2.Â
The Dukes outshot the Highlanders 19-9 and held a 6-5 lead in penalty corners. Radford led 8-7 in saves.Â
After a scoreless first half, Madison jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the second. Jenna Taylor received a pass in the center of the field and dribbled to the top of the circle. She slipped a pass over to Versfeld on the left-hand side and
