TOWSON, Md. – James Madison volleyball fell to Towson in three sets (20-25, 19-25, 23-25) Friday night to close out the regular season. The Dukes dropped to 12-4 in league play while the Tigers improved to 12-4, creating a tie for the top spot in the Colonial Athletic Association standings.
Junior right side hitter Janey Goodman led the Dukes with 18 kills, followed by freshman outside hitter Bryn Recker and junior outside hitter Kate Whitmire with seven each. Sophomore libero Taylor Austin led the defense with 12 digs, and senior setter Sarah Patterson dished out 37 assists on the night.
James Madison battled with Towson early in set one, tying it up at the 10-10 mark. The Tigers broke away from the tie on a 7-1 run, taking the lead for the remainder of the set.
Towson jumped out to a three-point edge early in set two. Following a JMU timeout, the Dukes closed the gap to 12-10 off back-to-back kills by Goodman, but the Tigers answered by taking three straight points and extending their lead to six (17-11). Towson's Steadman capped the set with two consecutive kills.
Tied at 7-7 in set three, the Tigers sparked a 5-1 run to take the lead for good. James Madison closed the gap to 22-21 late in the set, but Towson claimed the match with a kill from Lewis.
Quoting Head Coach Lauren Steinbrecher "I thought Towson played excellent tonight. Their serving, passing and offense were very good. Our offense was good, but I was disappointed with the discipline and pursuit of our defense. We will learn everything we can from tonight's match to be our best next weekend."
Freshman First Defensive specialist Jacqui Koebel recorded a career-high 10 digs on the night, doubling her previous career high of five digs.
Rising up the Record Boards With 18 kills, right side hitter Janey Goodman claimed eighth place in the JMU season record books with 447 kills in 2015. The last time a Duke broke into the season kill record books was Allyson Hall (486) in 2007.
What It Means With the loss, JMU finishes the regular season 12-4 and tied with Towson for first place. The Dukes still have a chance to earn the top seed and host the CAA tournament depending on how their league counterparts do on Sunday.
