Baseball Closes Series With 9-6 Win Over Quinnipiac

Â
JMU jumped on the Bobcats early, scoring seven runs in the first four innings to improve to 4-4 on the season, while sophomore right-hander Ford Bradshaw yielded three runs on five hits in his first career start to drop Quinnipiac to 2-2.
Â
The Bobcats struck first, picking up a run in the top of the first. Quinnipiac needed just a bunt single, stolen base and single to take an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Just an inning later, the Dukes would go open their scoring account and take the lead for good, all with two outs. Junior Bobby San Martin started things by blasting his first career triple to right field before freshman center fielder Adam Sisk singled him home with a shot through the left side.
Â
Freshman second baseman Kyle McPherson had to duck out of the way of a high-and-tight fastball to start the next at-bat, but launched the next pitch he saw over the left field fence for his first collegiate home run, putting the Dukes up 3-1.
Â
In the third, Parrott kept the pedal down when he led off the inning by launching a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center field. After a walk and an error put two more Dukes on base, sophomore Kyle Weston knocked an RBI single through the left side to make the lead 5-1.
Â
The Dukes tacked on two more in the fourth when junior shortstop Chad Carroll singled and Parrott walked to start the inning. After a pair of strikeouts, Weston pounded an RBI triple over the center fielder's head to score both runners and put JMU ahead 7-1.
Â
Quinnipiac pulled two runs back in the sixth, when it started the inning with a walk, a triple and a single, but JMU re-extended its lead in the seventh. Weston and sophomore left fielder Josh Wyatt reached base before San Martin bunted them over, with Weston scoring when an intentional walk attempt got past the catcher.
Â
Freshman center fielder Michael Sciorra and Carroll then walked to load the bases before Parrott drew a four-pitch free pass of his own to push the lead to 9-3. The Bobcats scored three in the eighth on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and 2-RBI single, but would get no closer than 9-6.
Â
Parrott's day at the plate paced the Dukes' offense, as the sophomore went 2-for-2 with three walks, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Weston finished his afternoon with a 3-for-4 line that included scoring a run and driving in three as JMU matched its highest run output of the season.
Â
Bradshaw ended his first start after 5.1 innings, striking out four en route to the win, while sophomore left-hander Michael Evans closed out the last 3.2 innings, striking out a career-high seven and allowing just three hits and a walk to get his second save of the year.
Â
JMU will be back in action next weekend, when it welcomes Canisius to Harrisonburg for a four-game set, March 6-8. The squads will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon, play a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Saturday and wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
