HEMPSTEAD, New York – In the Colonial Athletic Association lacrosse opener for both teams, No. 13 James Madison struggled to find the offense in the second half and fell at Hofstra, 13-8. With the loss, the Dukes are now 8-4 and 0-1 in the CAA, while the Pride improved to 6-4 and 1-0 in league play.
After battling back and forth in the first half at a 5-5 tie, the Dukes scored the first goal 38 seconds into the second period as junior midfielder Taylor Gress scored to go up 6-5. From there, the Pride scored seven straight goals over the next 19 minutes to take command of the game at 12-6. JMU got two late goals in the final four minutes but could not finish the rally.
JMU outshot Hofstra 23-21 and held a slight advantage in draw controls of 12-11. Both teams turned the ball over against the strong defenses, as the pair combined for 36 turnovers in the match. However, the significant difference occurred in saves, as the Pride had nine compared to two for the Dukes.
Redshirt-sophomore attacker Betsy Angel led the Dukes with three goals on three shots, while junior midfielders Jaci Gordon and Brooks Lawler each added a pair of goals. Brittain Altomare scored a game-high four goals and added an assist for the Pride, while Tiana Parrella and Becky Conto each had two goals, with Parrella tacking on two assists.
