BOSTON, Mass. – A header goal in the 103
rd minute by senior forward
Eric Schmidt propelled the James Madison men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Northeastern at Parsons Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Progressing play up the left flank, freshman midfielder
Thomas Shores crossed the ball in to Schmidt, who rose over two
Northeastern defenders to head the ball into the back of the net. The victory lifts the Dukes to 2-6-1 (1-1 CAA) on the season while the Huskies are still looking for their first win of the year at 0-6-2 (0-2 CAA).
Despite a 92-minute lightning delay in the first half, the flow of the game stayed even throughout with the Huskies barely outshooting the Dukes at 13-12 and saves leveling out at four each.
The balance of the game showed in the scoring as well. A 33
rd-minute strike to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead was erased only four minutes later when redshirt freshman
Billy Metzler headed home a cross from sophomore
Joe Vyner in the 37
th minute.
The Huskies jumped ahead again in the 69
th minute thanks to Frantzdy Pierrot's second goal of the season, but the Dukes were even quicker to answer this time as redshirt junior
Connor Coward fired from outside the 18-yard box to equalize for the second time on the day.
The Dukes return to action Saturday night when the No. 18 UNCW Seahawks visit Harrisonburg for a 7 p.m. showdown at University Park.
