Clemson, S.C. – Right-hander Clate Schmidt tossed seven shutout innings and Clemson took command with a five-run second inning to defeat James Madison 10-1 in a non-conference baseball game on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Clemson improved to 4-1 after claiming the second straight game in the three-game set while JMU dropped to 2-4.

Schmidt improved to 2-0 after seven shutout innings in which he allowed just three hits and struck out four. Catcher Chris Okey carried the offensive load for the Tigers, knocking in five runs on two hits, including a three-run home run in the fourth.

Chad Carroll had two of JMU's five hits in the leadoff spot.
Adam Sisk had the lone RBI on a ninth-inning single.

RUNS IN BUNCHESClemson scored all of its runs using multiple-run innings. The Tigers scored five runs on five hits in the second to take command and never looked back. The hosts added the three-run homer by Okey in the fourth and finished the scoring with two in the eighth.

Taylor Krugh continued his return from missing all of 2015 by tossing a pair of innings in relief while allowing just one hit. He has now pitched a total of four scoreless frames for the 2016 season.
