HARRISONBURG, Va. - George Mason scored in seven different innings, including five in a row, on Wednesday night as James Madison dropped a 16-5 non-conference decision to the Patriots at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. Â The Dukes, who fell to 9-12 on the year, racked up double-digit hits for the first time in four games, but left 13 runners on base as Mason improved to 6-15. Â Sophomore second baseman Kyle McPhersonraised his batting average to .329 with a 2-for-3 evening that included a double and an RBI, while junior catcher Zach Tondi and senior center fielder Tyler Carroll added a pair of hits each. Carroll also tacked on a career-best two RBIs. Â After a scoreless first, Mason scored in each of the next five innings, including four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth, to put the Dukes in a hole they could not dig out of. Â Carroll picked up RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings, with sophomore right fielder Adam Siskand senior third baseman Chad Carroll adding RBI triples in the sixth, but the Dukes would get no closer. McPherson singled home a run in the eighth, but Mason added insurance runs in each of the final two frames to close JMU out. Â Freshman right-hander Daniel Pinsonwas saddled with his second loss of the year after working 2 1/3 innings in his fourth career start, while freshman Matt Marsili provided the highlight for six Dukes pitchers with his longest career outing. The Apalachin, N.Y. native worked two complete frames, striking out a career-high three and yielding just one unearned run. Â All nine starters for Mason collected at least one hit and all but one scored at least one run. Left fielder Timothy Turner led the way with a 3-for-5 day that saw him score three runs and drive in another three. Eight Mason pitchers combined to keep the Patriots in front, with starter Tyler Kardas picking up his first win of the year. Â QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY "I was really happy with our energy tonight. Senior Chad Carroll ripped this triple down the left field line in the sixth inning against George Mason, bringing Tanner Dofflemyer in to score and extending his hitting streak to a career-best 17 games.
STILL STREAKING Senior third baseman Chad Carroll extended his hitting streak with an RBI triple in the sixth inning on Wednesday evening, marking the 17th consecutive contest in which Carroll has picked up at least one hit. The streak breaks his old career-best of 16 games, set during the 2013 season, his sophomore campaign. Â TOP-NOTCH TRANSFER Junior catcher Zach Tondi, who joined the Dukes from Fairleigh Dickinson is making his presence known quickly, with his 2-for-4 evening boosting his season average to .333, second-highest on the team. The Wood-Ridge, N.J. native also has multiple hits in three of the last six contests.
