HARRISONBURG, Va. - Northeastern racked up 29 hits en route to handing James Madison a 20-5 defeat in Sunday afternoon's Colonial Athletic Association series finale at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes fell to 11-13 (2-1 CAA) on the day, despite having won their opening CAA series for the first time since sweeping Hofstra in 2013. Northeastern improved to 10-11 (1-2 CAA) after scoring in six different innings, including a combined 14 runs across the fourth and fifth frames.
Â
Sophomore right fielder
Adam Sisk and junior catcher
Zach Tondi continued their run of success at the plate, posting a pair of 2-for-3 days as Sisk added two of the Dukes' five runs. Sophomore second baseman
Kyle McPherson tallied his second home run to left-center field in as many games, launching a solo shot on the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning.
Â
Eight of the nine Northeastern starters struck for multiple hits on the day, led by four-hit performances from left fielder Pat Madigan and shortstop Max Burt. Madigan, designated hitter Zach Perry and right fielder Shane Allen all hit homers for the Huskies.
Â
Northeastern struck early, when Perry hit a three-run homer to right-center in the first inning and third baseman Charlie McConnell added an RBI single in the second to go up, 4-0. The Dukes scored in the bottom half of the frame to cut the lead to three, but six runs for the Huskies in the top of the fourth put JMU behind, 10-1.
Â
After McPherson opened the bottom of the inning with his solo shot, Sisk would score shortly thereafter on a wild pitch to make it 10-3, but Northeastern poured on eight runs in the fifth inning to put things out of reach. JMU would plate a pair of runs in the seventh to no avail, as the Huskies added a tally each in the seventh and ninth frames. Northeastern's 29 hits were the most JMU has given up in a single game, breaking the previous record of 25, a mark set in 2007 against George State and matched in 2012 against Bucknell.
Â
Junior right-hander
Brandon Withers fell to 1-3 in the loss after getting tagged for eight hits, including six singles, through the first three innings. Sophomore
Eric Yankey was the only of seven JMU pitchers to not yield a run, working 1 1/3 scoreless frames and striking out a pair.
Â
Northeastern starter Dustin Hunt picked up the win to improve to 2-2 after striking out seven and surrendering three runs through the opening five frames.
Â
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY"It was a tough one today, but give credit to Northeastern. That's a good team and they took full advantage of a lot of missed spots by us. Still, I'm proud of the way our team battled this weekend and we're very happy to open conference play by winning the series."
Â
UP NEXTThe Dukes hit the road for the first half of an eight-game road trip this week, beginning with a Tuesday, March 29 contest at Richmond at 3 p.m. The Spiders are 13-11 after dropping two of three to St. Joseph's this weekend.
Â
JMU will continue its CAA slate over the weekend, with a three-game set at Delaware on Friday-Sunday, April 1-3. The Blue Hens opened league play at College of Charleston, where they were swept in three games by the Cougars.
