Chad Carroll and center fielder
Mike Sciorra each had three hits, two runs and two RBIs to lead James Madison to a 12-7 victory over UMBC to open a three-game, non-conference baseball series on Friday afternoon at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

JMU won its second straight to improve to 4-5 while UMBC dropped to 1-8 on the season.

Sciorra's solo home run in the second gave the Dukes a 3-2 lead before the hosts built a cushion with a three-run fourth and pulled away from a two-run advantage with a six-run eighth.

Redshirt senior
Aaron Hoover allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 2-1. Four relievers combined to finish the win on the mound. Starter Conrad Wozniak (1-2) took the loss for UMBC after allowing six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Carroll had a double while going 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot. Sciorra's home run was his first of the season. Designated hitter
Brett Johnson also homered, his second of the season, to go with a double and three RBIs.

First baseman Anthony Gatto was 4-for-5, all singles, to pace the Retrievers' offense. Shortstop Kevin Lachance had two hits, a walk and two RBIs while third baseman A.J. Wright was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a walk.

Aaron Hoover got us into the game. I thought the bullpen did a great job of maintaining the lead. I was very proud of the way the offense came to life and put up a big number in the bottom of the eighth. It was good to see us play offense the way we did tonight."

Putting it AwayAfter UMBC closed it to a two-run game at 6-4 after two runs in the seventh, JMU responded in the eighth with a six-run inning on seven hits to put the game away. The outburst was the most productive single inning of the season for the Dukes, who were coming off of seven total runs in their previous five games. JMU hit .500 (8-for-16) with runners in scoring position, stranding just six runners on a day it had 14 hits.

Ky Parrott's RBI single as part of the eighth-inning outbreak extended his hitting streak to nine games, giving him a hit in each game of the 2016 season. Carroll's three-hit afternoon gave him hits in eight of nine games this season, including the last five straight. It was Carroll's sixth multiple-hit game of the season, which leads the Dukes.
