NEWARK, Del. – Delaware scored four straight goals to end the half and James Madison was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 12-8 Friday night at Delaware Stadium for its first Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse loss of the season.

The Dukes fell to 8-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play while the Blue Hens improved to 10-6 and 2-3. Delaware snapped an eight-game skid against JMU, winning for the first time since the 2009 season in the series.

Senior midfielder Brooks Lawler scored a team-best three goals while senior midfielder Jaci Gordon and sophomore midfielderHaley Warden both had two goals apiece. Senior defender Alex Revel led the defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls while Warden had four draws and two ground balls. Senior midfielder Taylor Gress also collected four draw controls and senior defender Carter Reifsnider added a caused turnover and three ground balls.

JMU outshot UD 21-19, including 17-16 on goal but turned it over nine times. The Dukes also held a 14-8 advantage on the draw control. Delaware was paced by Casey Lyons, who had three goals and an assist. Shannon Hawley and Coley Ricci both contributed two goals and a helper each.

The Hens opened the game with back-to-back goals in the first 2:30 but JMU answered with two of its own to tie it at 2-2 with 24:03 left in the half. After both squads traded 2-0 mini runs, Delaware held JMU scoreless for the final 17:15, scoring four straight to take an 8-4 lead at the break.

Warden scored right out of the gates in the second but UD answered with two in a row to lead 10-5 with 23:17 remaining. The Dukes and Hens traded goals over the final 18-plus minutes as UD handed JMU its first league loss and kept its playoff hopes alive.

JMU closes the regular season Sunday at noon when it faces Towson on the road. The winner of that game will earn the No. 1 seed for the upcoming CAA Championship.

Sunday's final regular season game will determine the top seed for the CAA Championship and regular-season champion. JMU, which will make its 22nd CAA Championship appearance next month, has been the No. 1 seed six times since 1992.
