JMU Splits U.Va. Duals Against Liberty and Virginia

EARLYSVILLE, Va. – Freshman Caitlin Swanson turned in the third-fastest time (15:22) in the women's 4K race at the U.Va. Duals on Thursday at Panorama Farms as James Madison cross country split its duals, defeating Liberty 15-40 and falling to Virginia 18-40.
"We ran an excellent team race and they did a great job of sticking to our race plan," said Head Coach Dave Rinker. "It was very hot and humid, which slowed down the times. However, the times were not as important as how they raced, and I am quite pleased."
Three more top-10 performances bolstered the Dukes' scoring on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Erica Jackson (15:36) and junior Madeleine McCarty (15:42) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while freshman Emily Murphy (15:48) started her collegiate career with a 10th-place finish. JMU's scoring times were rounded out by freshman Rachel Boyce (15:57), who came in 12th.
Points were awarded to a team's top five finishers, with the fastest time earning one point, the second-fastest time earning two, and so on as compared to the opposing team. JMU's 15-40 score over the Flames represented a clean sweep, as the top five JMU runners all finished ahead of Liberty's top five runners.
Virginia had five of the six best times of the day, helping the Cavaliers to secure an 18-40 win over the Dukes.
Sophomores Micaela Poggi (16:26) and Elise Rasmussen (17:34) also ran for JMU, finishing 21st and 29th, respectively.
JMU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 10 when it hosts the JMU Invitational at New Market Battlefield.
