A four-year starter for the Dukes and a two-time All-American, Kelly Berger helped lead the JMU women's lacrosse team to two CAA Championships and two NCAA appearances during her career (2004-07). She is currently a member of the 2017 US Women's National Team Roster, having previously won a world championship with US Lacrosse in 2009.
          Â
As a freshman, she ranked third on the team in goals and points and second in game-winning goals, and received the team's Rookie of the Year award. She was then named either MVP or co-MVP each year during her sophomore through senior seasons. As a junior in 2006, she received First Team honors IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America, VaSID, All-South and the CAA, and was also named the CAA Player of the Year. As a senior she was again named to the CAA and the VaSID First Teams. Following her graduation, she was selected to participate in the August 2007 tryouts for the US developmental and elite teams.
          Â
Berger played in 73 games during her JMU career, racking up 184 goals and 78 assists for 262 total points. She ranks second in JMU history in career goals (184), second in career points (262) and third in career assists (78). Her 59 goals as a junior rank third in Dukes history while her 93 points rank second.
Q&A With Kelly
1. When you think about your time as a student-athlete at JMU, what highlights or memories stand out?
All of our games on the historic JMU turf. Our drives from the locker room up to our field for a midday practice. The year the football team won the National Championship. Saturday fall days at JMU. Our CAA tournament when we hosted as the top seed. My amazing teammates and friends that I made at JMU that I will hold close to my heart for the rest of my life.
2. What memories stand out about JMU as a university?
The friends you walk away with and how kind everyone is at JMU, both students and the community. How supportive the community is of the university. How close all the athletes are along with how supportive the entire athletic department is of all sports.
3. What team rituals or traditions do you miss the most?
Pregame meals with the team, trips to Mr. J's and Walmart and decorating the locker room for game day.
4. What kept you motivated on a daily basis as a student-athlete?
Knowing I was representing something bigger then myself.
5.. If you could go back in time to your time here at JMU as a student-athlete, would you do anything differently?
I would sit back and try to take it in a little bit more...because it was awesome.
6. How well have you stayed connected to JMU since your time as a student-athlete?
I have not been back as much as I wish but it is easy to stay connected from a distance to this school due to how much pride you take with you when you leave. You make it a point - even if you are not in Harrisonburg, you find out the most updated information about the Dukes.
7. What was your greatest achievement individually and as a team during your time at JMU?
Winning the CAA conference and heading to NCAA's. Being named an All American.Â
8. What are you doing today in your professional career?
I am still competing for the Women's National Team and currently working in the fitness world as a trainer and instructor. I have also gone back to school for interior decorating.
