HARRISONBURG, Va. – Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe celebrated her program-record 119th win in style, as 19th-ranked James Madison rolled to a 15-4 women's lacrosse victory against High Point on Saturday afternoon in the home opener at Sentara Park.
The Dukes won for the fourth straight time to improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Panthers dropped to 0-3. It was JMU's second double-digit win of the season, accompanying its 18-6 win earlier this month at Michigan.
Five different players scored two or more goals, led by freshman midfielder Maddie McDaniel, who found the back of the net a career-high three times. Junior attacker Kristen Gaudian scored two goals while dishing out a career-high two assists, and sophomore midfielder Hanna Haven and junior midfielder Elena Romesburg each accrued two goals and an assist. Junior attacker Katie Kerrigan scored once, while tying her career best with three assists.
Junior midfielder Haley Warden struck for two goals, but more importantly tallied four caused turnovers and four ground balls, which tied her career high in both categories. A total of 10 players collected at least one ground ball and six had two or more. Junior goalkeeper Emily Poelma was tremendous between the pipes, improving to 4-1 after making seven saves on 10 shots on goal in a little less than 50 minutes of work.
The Dukes out-shot HPU 26-21, including an 18-12 ledger in shots on goal. JMU held an 18-15 advantage in ground balls, which included a 14-9 lead in the first half. The Panthers won 13 of 21 draw controls and held a slim 10-9 edge in caused turnovers.
JMU opened the game scoring four straight goals but HPU responded with back-to-back scores to close the gap to 4-2 with 10:09 to go in the first half. The Dukes answered back with a huge run over the final 8:44, scoring six straight to grab a 10-2 lead at halftime.
The run continued in the second half with two more goals to cap an 8-0 run that spanned 14:33. That gave the Dukes a 12-2 lead with 24:11 to play. JMU held HPU without a goal for 17:45, and after conceding one, did not allow the Panthers to score for the next 21:19.
DEE MCDONOUGH ON KLAES-BAWCOMBE'S WINS RECORD
Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe became JMU's all-time winningest coach in today's win, passing her former coach and mentor Dee McDonough. McDonough, who won 118 games for the Dukes and is a member of the JMU Athletics Hall of Fame, was on the sideline to witness Shelley's record 119th win at JMU.
"The thing that Shelley embraces that is so important is she wants to win but is also invested in her student-athletes. It's something we tried to do a long time ago," McDonough said. "I'm so proud of Shelley, she's embraced that and it's part of her being. Her athletes love her for it and I just couldn't be prouder."

MCDANIEL LEADS OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
Playing in only her fifth career game, Maddie McDaniel has begun to find her rhythm within this team. After scoring her first two career goals last Sunday against UConn, McDaniel led all scorers with a career-high three goals. She also created hustle stats, collecting a pair of ground balls in the win.
WARDEN'S HUSTLE BECOMING A CONSTANT
Haley Warden is known for her draw-control ability, ranking 16th all-time at JMU with 90 draw controls. But she's also enhanced her game when it comes to caused turnovers and ground balls. Warden caused four turnovers and collected four ground balls, which tied her career highs in both. She leads the team with 12 caused turnovers and is second with 11 ground balls so far in 2017.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
JMU found multiple ways of scoring in the 11-goal victory, as the Dukes produced seven assists on their 15 goals. Three helpers came off the stick of Katie Kerrigan, who tied her career high in assists. Kristen Gaudian also had her first multi-assist game, dishing out two assists. This season, JMU has accumulated 30 assists on its 67 goals (45%).
