ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Former James Madison goalkeeper
Kyle Morton (2012-16) has signed a professional contract with the Rochester Rhinos, the club announced Tuesday.
Morton has been the staple of the JMU defense for the past three seasons, starting all but one game in that time span. The three-time Third Team All-Colonial Athletic Association honoree was the only JMU player to not miss a single minute of action in 2016. An imposing force between the posts, Morton recorded four shutouts and 60 saves while collecting a 1.22 goals-against average and a 0.741 save percentage. The goalkeeper from West Chester, Pa. was a difference maker in conference play, with all four of his clean sheets coming against CAA foes.
Morton's impact went beyond the stat sheet, regularly controlling crosses and loose balls in his box, marshaling the defense in front of him, and serving as team captain. Across his career, he played in 69 games and recorded 254 saves, the fourth-most in JMU history.
The Rhinos play in the United Soccer League (USL), the second division in the United States Soccer Federation league system. The USL features 30 teams across the U.S. and Canada, including FC Cincinnati, where former JMU midfielder
Francisco Narbon currently plays, and Ottawa Fury FC, the club of former JMU midfielder
Jonathan Barden.
JMU finished its 2016 campaign with four straight wins, including five victories in the last six matches. Morton,
Billy Metzler and
Callum Hill were all named to the All-CAA Third Team.
