WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The James Madison women's golf team closed out its first tournament of the 2017-18 season on Monday afternoon, taking home seventh place at the William & Mary Invitational, hosted at the par-72, 6,122-yard Kingsmill Resort River Course.
The Dukes, who had entered the final round in seventh as well, fired a 24-over 312 on the final day of competition, just six strokes behind sixth-place Xavier at 926. Penn State held off a charge from second-place UNCW to take home the team title with a final score of 888.
Seniors
Gabrielle Weiss and
Laura Gomez-Ruiz paced JMU on the final day of competition, posting identical rounds of 3-over 75 on the afternoon.
Weiss shaved six strokes off her second-round score, using her best round of the tournament to climb nine spots into sole possession of 44th at the 67-player event. Gomez-Ruiz continued her steady play, racking up 13 pars and climbing seventh spots into a tie for 13th at 227 (+13).
Senior
Maddisen Cox took home a tie for 26th at 231 (+15), while junior
Katie Turk (235, +19) and sophomore
Morgan Cox closed out the Dukes' scoring (243, +27) in 35th and 53rd, respectively.
Playing as an individual, sophomore
Lauren Comegys turned in one of the Dukes' best rounds of the weekend on Monday, posting a 1-over 73 that saw her play her final 11 holes at 1-under. The performance pushed her up into a tie for 26th at 231 (+15) for the weekend. Freshman
Ella Woods closed her first collegiate tournament in 62nd at 258.

The Dukes will be back in action in two weeks, when they head to Greenville, S.C. to take part in the Lady Paladin Invitational from Sept. 22-24. JMU last took part in the event in 2015, when then-sophomore
Maddisen Cox tied for 14th at the 96-player event at 6-over 222 (75-75-72).
