Dukes Travel to Virginia Tech for Third Round

THE THIRD ROUND
- James Madison travels to Blacksburg, Va. to face in-state foe Virginia Tech in Third Round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Thompson Field.
- Tickets can be purchased at the gate to Thompson Field. Adult tickets are $10 and youth tickets are available for $5.
- The Dukes received an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Colonial Athletic Association Championship match in penalty kicks, 4-2, over Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 11. JMU advanced to the Second Round after blanking High Point, 3-0. The Dukes went on to the Second Round where they defeated fifth-seeded UNC, 2-1.
- This is the 31st meeting between the two programs and JMU holds the all-time series record 21-6-3. The Dukes are 11-0-1 when playing on the road in Blacksburg. The teams last met on September 4, 2005 when JMU topped Virginia Tech, 1-0.
- Virginia Tech earned a national seed in the tournament for the first time since 2007 when the Hokies made an appearance at the College Cup.
- Recapping UNC: JMU took down fifth-seeded North Carolina, 2-1, in the Second Round of the 2018 NCAA Championship. Junior Manuel Ferriol ripped a shot into the upper 90 in the 27th minute to give JMU the early 1-0 lead. The Tar Heels answered five minutes later as Giovanni Montesdeoca scored off a corner kick. Senior Aaron Ward-Baptiste notched the game-winning goal in the 68th minute, splitting two defenders to slip the ball under UNC's James Pyle to score his seventh goal of his senior campaign.
- Recapping High Point: The Dukes shut out High Point, winning 3-0 in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Championship at Vert Stadium. The Dukes took seven shots while the Panthers were unable to take a single shot on frame, resulting in JMU's 12th shutout of the season. Ward-Baptiste tallied three points from the game-winning goal in the 19th minute and an assist while Ferriol notched a brace, scoring on both sides of the halves.
- This is the 13th appearance for JMU in the NCAA Tournament and its first since 2014.
- The Dukes hold a 6-12-1 all-time record in the tournament and have made it as far as the Quarterfinals in both 1994 and 1995.
- When the Dukes made it to the Quarterfinals in 1994, JMU fell to Virginia in Charlottesville, 4-1. The following year, the Dukes made it back to the Quarterfinals round but was edged by Duke 3-2 in Durham, N.C.
- The winner of Sunday's match advances to the Quarterfinals and will face the winner of Georgetown vs. Michigan State. The Quarterfinals are set for either November 30 or December 1.
