MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The James Madison softball team was shut out for the first time this season in the series finale versus the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 decision.
The Dukes fell to 30-9 overall and 10-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play while Charleston moved to 24-20 and 4-8 in league play.
A hard-hit double to left field in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference maker as the Dukes could not rally in the seventh to score. The Cougars tallied five hits on the day off sophomore Odicci Alexander with three of them coming in the sixth.
Alexander tossed her 12th complete game of the season, facing 24 batters throwing 80 pitches, only allowing one earned run on five hits while walking one and fanning two. With the loss she moves to 16-4 in the circle.
Alexander, Kate Gordon and Madison Naujokas all notched singles in the contest to account for the Dukes' three hits on the day. JMU left the bases loaded once and left nine stranded on the day. The Cougars walked seven Dukes in the game but JMU was never able to advance runners home.
QUOTING COACH LAPORTE
"This is a tough loss, every game at this time of year matters and we just didn't play our best ball today. Charleston came out ready to fight and we just couldn't get anything going today at the plate. We will take this as an opportunity to learn and grow from our mistakes as we look forward toward our midweek doubleheader."

The Dukes head to West Virginia for a doubleheader with Marshall on Wednesday, April 18. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
