HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne announced on Wednesday that Robert Kennedy has been hired as team physician to provide health care services to all student-athletes.
"We are glad to welcome Robert to the JMU Athletics family," Bourne said. "We were excited to identify someone with Robert's diverse background and qualifications so close to campus. We look forward to his contributions to our advanced approach to the health and welfare of our student-athletes as part of our integrated health and sport performance model."
Since 2013, Kennedy has operated American Health and Wellness Institute, an outpatient family care and sports medicine practice that he started in nearby Verona, Virginia. In conjunction with his practice, he has also worked with JMU family nurse practitioner students since 2016.
"I'm extremely excited to get started with the JMU sports medicine team," Kennedy said. "I am grateful to the staff and university for considering me for this role. Dr. [Kent} Diduch did a superlative job caring for the students and created a very high standard. We'll give our maximum effort to maintain that standard and keep all the student athletes healthy."
Prior to opening his own practice, Kennedy worked as a family physician, sharing Augusta Health Family Practice in Verona from 2005 to 2013 while serving approximately 3,000 patients.
While working at his practice in Verona, Kennedy has been actively involved in sports medicine, providing services for multiple area colleges, high schools and community events. Until his hiring at JMU, he provided team physician services at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton since 2005 and at Fort Defiance High School since 2007.
"We are extremely excited to have Dr. Kennedy join us as our team physician at JMU," Associate A.D. for Integrated Health and Sports Performance
Tom Kuster said. "This position obviously serves a critical role for us and demonstrates the commitment we have made at JMU to student-athlete welfare and ensuring that our student-athletes have access to quality healthcare. I know myself, my staff and our partners at UVA Orthopedics are thrilled to have him on board and are looking forward to working with him."
Kennedy received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Notre Dame, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1996 while also being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn his medical doctorate from the University of Virginia in 2000. He conducted his postgraduate training in South Bend, Indiana, before returning to Virginia in 2005 for the opportunity at Augusta Health Family Practice.
Among his multiple professional memberships, Kennedy is part of the Medical Fitness Association, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Association and American Academy of Family Physicians. His certifications include Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), American Board of Family Medicine and Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.
Kennedy lives in Crozet with his wife Jamie. Their daughter Anna resides in South Bend while their son Frank attends William and Mary.
