WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The James Madison women's golf team carded the lowest team score of the day on Monday, taking home third place at the William & Mary Invitational, hosted by W&M at the par-72, 6,043-yard River Course at Kingsmill Resort.
Facing a difficult final-round course setup, the Dukes posted a 303 (+15) on the day, three strokes better than any other team performed in its final round and strong enough to keep a tight grip on sole possession of third place at the 12-school tournament, just six strokes back of team champion Marshall.
Junior
Lauren Comegys took home the highest finish and second top-five finish of her collegiate career, continuing her stellar weekend with her second consecutive round of even-par 72 to close with a career-best 214 (-2) that sealed runner-up honors at the 73-player event for her, only four strokes behind individual medalist Shelby Brauckmuller of Marshall.
Freshman
Kate Owens earned her own top-five honors in her first career tournament, carding her second straight 3-over 75 to climb into a four-way tie for fourth place at 220 (+4), while senior
Katie Turk was the Dukes' biggest climber of the day, vaulting 10 spots into sole possession of 13th with a final-round 1-over 73.
Freshman
Carly Lyvers (t-35th) and sophomore
Ella Woods (71st) closed things out for the Dukes with rounds of 83 and 84, respectively. Last year, the Dukes took seventh in the team competition at the William & Mary Invitational.
QUOTING COACH BAKER
"This was a strong way to end our first tournament of the year. Against a tough course set-up for the final round, we found a way to dig our heels in and hold our ground to post the best score of the day. We can take a lot from this weekend as we come back and get to work."
UP NEXT
The Dukes will be back in action in two weeks, when they travel to Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. to compete in the Lady Paladin Invitational on Sept. 21-23. JMU finished 13th at the event in the fall of 2017.
