HARRISONBURG, Va – James Madison men's tennis Head Coach Steve Secord signed a contract extension, keeping him at the helm of the Dukes through the 2022-23 season, as announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne.
"Steve has been a fixture at the JMU men's tennis program and has guided the program to heightened success in recent seasons," Bourne said. "Our student-athletes have consistently performed well in the classroom and served as great ambassadors of JMU. I'm confident that Steve will continue to build upon recent success on the court and will lead our student-athletes to compete at a high level in the CAA"
Secord is in his 27th year as head coach of the Dukes and is the winningest head coach in program history with 262 total wins. Since the 2014-15 season, JMU has seen its win total increase every year, capped by a 16-7 mark last season – the highest team-win total since the 1989-90 season and highest under Secord's tenure.
"Winning is the ultimate goal and we focus on the process of consistently winning against high competition every day," Secord said. "I've been fortunate to work with great assistant coaches the past few years. The support staff we have - including administrative assistants, academic advisors, equipment staff, trainers, and sports information directors - makes a team for our team. I'm grateful to work with all of these outstanding people who bleed purple."
In just three years, the Dukes doubled their win total of eight from 2014-15 season. Recently, Secord has recruited the last two CAA Rookie of the Year's in sophomore Alvaro Arce and junior Damon Roberts, both of which are part of the 2018-2019 Dukes team. Arce and Roberts along with Josh Raymundo, Gonzalo Adis and Theophile Lanthiez landed on the 2018 CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a GPA above the 3.0 threshold.
"Seeing young people grow and develop through this awesome sport of tennis while pursuing a degree at such wonderful university is a gift," Secord said. "JMU prepares these gifted people to be amazing and make a difference in the world and I am humbled to be a small part of that. I look forward to the next few years."
Secord has coached four JMU teams to the CAA semifinals (2000, 2001, 2013, 2014) and posted a winning record on 10 different occasions, including five of the last nine years. He earned CAA Co-Coach of the Year in 2012, a year in which the Dukes won seven of their final 10 matches, including beating William & Mary for the first time in 16 years.
Secord, who received a degree in psychology from JMU in 1991, led the Dukes to CAA Championships in 1989 and 1991 as a player. The two years he didn't hoist the CAA trophy, the team finished as the runner up in the CAA. Secord ended his playing days at JMU while helping lead the Dukes to a 55-27 record. He had a career record of 67-34 in singles and 63-34 in doubles.
Prior to his coaching career in Harrisonburg, Secord was the tennis professional at the Valley Wellness Center in Harrisonburg and has been as assistant professional at the Montclair Country Club in Dumfries and the Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.
