Dukes Record Two Run-Rule Wins in Doubleheader

HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 20 James Madison softball dominated UNCW in Saturday's doubleheader, shutting out the Seahawks in run-rule fashion, 8-0 and 13-0 in five innings each at Veterans Memorial Park.

With the wins, the Dukes notched their 30th victory of the season, improving to 30-7 overall and 10-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Seahawks fell to 22-20 and 4-7.

Sophomore Sara Jubas and junior Odicci Alexander launched two home runs each on the day, hitting all four of JMU's home runs. Jubas led the Dukes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with eight RBI while notching the first multi-home run game of her career.

GAME 1
The Dukes got out to an early 4-0 lead in the first as sophomore Logan Newton hit a RBI single and Jubas sent a two-run double to the wall in left field. With two outs in the second, redshirt senior Megan Good singled and was brought home on Alexander's first two-run shot of the day for a 6-0 lead.

Junior Cambry Arnold reached on an infield single to shortstop in the third and used her speed to beat out another throw in the fifth for her second hit in the contest. Entering the game as a pinch hitter, freshman Victoria Figueroa ripped a ball to the wall in right center for her first triple in a JMU uniform while bringing another run across the plate (7-0). Sophomore Hannah File hit a walk-off double to bring Figueroa home for a final score of 8-0.

Alexander recorded her 12th win of 2019, pitching five innings in which she only let up two hits while earning a season-high 11 strikeouts in the shutout victory.

GAME 2
Similar to game one, the Dukes got off to a hot start in the second game, plating four runs on three hits. Jubas blasted a three-run home run to center, giving JMU a 4-0 advantage after one frame.

Sophomore Madison Naujokas began the second inning with a hard-hit ball to the pitcher for a single. The Dukes then drew three consecutive walks to bring in a run (5-0). Newton plated two more on a double and Jubas hit her second three-run homer of the game to expand JMU's lead to 10-0.

JMU added its last three runs of the game in the third, starting with a RBI double from Good. Alexander brought Good across the plate on her second long ball of the doubleheader for a final score of 13-0.

Good hurled a one-hitter for her 12th win in the circle after pitching five innings in which she only allowed one walk. Closing in on the JMU career strikeout record, Good racked up 10 K's in the game, upping her career total to 815 to tie Jailyn Ford.

"After the loss on Wednesday, we put a lot of emphasis on plate discipline at practice the past few days. I was happy with the way our girls attacked pitches at the plate. We played JMU softball – hitting home runs and doubles. There were a few plays that we need to make in the field, but we had two great team wins today."
