Dukes Drop 12-Inning Heartbreaker to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 16 James Madison softball was handed its first loss in 21 games as No. 19 Michigan hit a walk-off single to defeat the Dukes, 1-0, in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in the Ann Arbor Regional.Â

JMU slides to 48-8 on the season while Michigan, the 15th overall seed in the 2019 NCAA Softball Championship, improves to 45-11. The Dukes will play the winner of DePaul versus Saint Francis in the elimination game tonight.Â
Redshirt senior Megan Good pitched 11 2/3 innings, throwing 182 pitches in the longest appearance of her career. The Mount Sidney native recorded eight strikeouts will allowing seven hits in the loss as she moves to 19-6 in the 2019 campaign.Â

JMU's strong pitching and defense stranded 14 Wolverines on base, extending the contest into extra innings that lasted nearly four hours.Â

Michigan put pressure on the Dukes early, notching the first hit of the game while loading the bases with back-to-back walks. Good used three pitches to grab her second strikeout of the inning to halt the Wolverines' threat.Â

The Dukes notched their first hits of the game in the top of the fifth with singles from sophomore Sara Jubas and junior Madison Naujokas. Good helped her cause going 2-for-5 on the day with a base hit in both the sixth and 11th frames. Sophomore Logan Newton collected JMU's fifth and final hit of the game with a single in the top of the 12th.

Michigan's Natalie Peters doubled in the bottom of the 12th and scored the game-winning run on a single from junior Madison Uden.Â

"That was probably one of the best ball games I've ever been a part of and it just didn't go our way. That game was going to come down to one big hit and that's what happened. We have to play another game tonight so it's about the response at this point. Our team needs to come out ready to play so we have another chance against Michigan tomorrow."
