LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis completed the third and final day of the Liberty Invitational with a pair of singles victories and one doubles triumph Sunday afternoon at the Cook Tennis Complex.
The day featured a pair of Dukes competed against each other in the red singles draw, as freshman
Holden Koons completed his opening weekend with a 3-1 record after besting junior
Alvaro Arce in straight sets, winning the match 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore
William Karpinski earned his second singles triumph in the white draw, taking down Kennesaw State's Drew Lahey in three sets (7-5, 4-6, 6-3). Also competing in singles play was sophomore
Stefan Petrovic, who fell in three sets to Richmond's John Walsh (1-6, 7-6(8), 6-2) in the red draw.
The Dukes went 1-1 in doubles play Sunday, with the team of Arce and Koons collecting their first doubles win with a 6-2 victory over KSU's Bryan Triana and Seru Tezuka in the red doubles draw.
Karpinski and Petrovic, who competed in the white doubles draw, were matched up with Richmond's Matthew Fernandez and Ricky Bell from the red draw, falling 6-3. Both teams' original opponents withdrew, allowing for the two tandems from separate draws to face off.
QUOTING ASSISTANT COACH JASON SINKOFF
"Everyone competed well all weekend and played a little better every single day. Today was by far our best doubles. Guys communicated well, put a lot of pressure on opponents by returning better, and took care of business on their serves. We have a lot we still need to work on and look forward to this week of practice as we get ready for the Greensboro tournament next weekend."
UP NEXT
JMU heads south once again next weekend for the UNCG Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Action takes place from Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22 at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
