HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis announced Friday that as part of the NCAA's spring-sport eligibility relief,
Jona Roka will return for the Dukes in the 2020-21 academic year.
Â
Roka made her intent to return for a redshirt senior season known Friday afternoon on Instagram.
Â
"We are thrilled Jona has chosen to return for her redshirt senior season," Head Coach
Shelley Jaudon said. "I believe there is a lot left for Jona to accomplish in her time at JMU. She has grown immensely as a person and player throughout her career, and I look forward to seeing that all come together for her next season."
Â
Roka is one of the program's winningest student-athletes, as she ranks second all-time with 143 total victories. She's also second in JMU history with 71 career doubles wins and tied for fourth with 72 career singles wins.
Â
Playing primarily at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles this past season, Roka was 15-10 in singles play and 19-5 in doubles. She, along with doubles partner
Daria Afanasyeva won their last nine matches prior to the season being canceled in mid-March. She also won the Flight G singles title and Flight B doubles championship at the Wildcat Invite in Evanston, Ill., back in the fall.
Â
She was part of JMU's first CAA championship in 2018-19, rallying in her singles match to clinch the Dukes' first championship in program history. As a sophomore in 2017-18, Roka was a Second Team All-CAA singles competitor, turning in 24 singles victories, which is her single-season career high.
Â
With the return of Roka, JMU women's tennis, which remains the defending CAA champion, returns all letterwinners from the 2019-20 roster next season while welcoming in two newcomers.
