HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison volleyball secured the weekend opener in a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-22) victory at Hofstra on Saturday.
JMU improved to 17-6 overall and remained tied for first in the conference with an 11-4 mark. Hofstra fell to 13-13 on the season and 7-8 in league play.
Sophomore
Miëtte Veldman led the Dukes with 14 kills for the match, while junior
Sophia Davis added 10 without committing a single attacking error. Davis also hit .500 for the match, and has hit .500 or better in five of her last seven matches. Sophomore
Elizabeth Helmich defended for four blocks to lead JMU.
The Dukes' last seven victories have all been in three sets, and JMU has 10 sweeps in total this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Hofstra took an early 12-9 lead, before JMU went on a 7-0 run to go up 16-12. Hofstra responded, winning nine of 12 to grab a 21-19 lead. The Dukes fought off two Hofstra set points, and then won three in a row to close out a thrilling 27-25 set. Davis had two kills in the last three points.
Second Set
Set two was back-and-forth, much like the first, with Hofstra grabbing several slim leads in the middle of the set. Down 14-13, the Dukes went on a 5-0 run to grab a 18-14 advantage, but the Pride closed to within a point three separate times. The Dukes won five of seven to finish the set 25-21, with Veldman providing the final kill. JMU hit .481 in the set.
Third Set
In another back-and-forth battle, the Dukes pushed to a 14-11 lead, before the Pride took eight of ten points to grab a 19-16 advantage. JMU retook a 22-21 lead with a 4-0 run and finished the match with a 3-0 run on three straight Hofstra attacking errors.
UP NEXT
JMU will close out the regular season at Hofstra on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. ET, with a chance to clinch at least a share of the regular season title. Streaming is available on FloSports. The Dukes are tied with Towson for first, who will take on Northeastern on Sunday.
