11/18/2021 11:00:00 AM | Lacrosse
HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse has announced its 2022 schedule, as released by Head Coach Shelley Klaes on Thursday.
Â
The Dukes will play 17 games in total: nine at home, seven on the road, and one neutral.
Â
"I look forward to seeing our team respond to the CAA's decision to remove JMU from postseason tournaments," Klaes said. "We are only guaranteed the games listed on our regular season schedule. Our schedule is highly competitive and we are on a mission to prove we deserve to compete in the 2022 National Championship. This JMU team is ready to attack the challenge, one win at a time."
Â
JMU kicks off the season at home against North Carolina on Feb. 12. This is a rematch of last season's NCAA Second Round game, which was won by the then top-ranked Tar Heels 14-9. North Carolina fell in the NCAA Semifinals to eventual national champion Boston College, and finished No. 3 in the final IWLCA coaches poll.
Â
After a marquee opener, the Dukes remain home to face Interstate 81 foe Virginia Tech on Feb. 16. JMU is 18-0 all-time against the Hokies, winning 9-8 in overtime in their last matchup on Feb. 12, 2020.
Â
JMU will then head to the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md., hometown of redshirt sophomore attacker Isabella Peterson, for a matchup against UConn on Feb. 19. The Dukes will return home to close out February against High Point on Feb. 26, exactly one year after opening the 2021 season with a 10-9 overtime victory over the Panthers.
Â
Three Big Ten matchups await the Dukes to begin March, beginning with road matchups against Ohio State (March 4) and Penn State (Mar. 9), and ending with a home battle against Rutgers (March 12).
Â
After a March 16 home game against Richmond, JMU will face road matchups at Virginia (March 20) and Maryland (March 26). The Cavaliers and Terrapins finished No. 11 and No. 10 in the final coaches' poll last season, respectively.
Â
James Madison will host Liberty on April 13 to close out the non-conference slate.
Â
The Dukes open conference play against Towson on March 30, and will have six games to determine the regular season champion. The last of these matchups will be at Drexel on April 30. JMU won last year's conference championship game against the Dragons in a 13-12 overtime thriller.
