HARRISONBURG, Va. — Junior
Kiki Jefferson tied her career-high 31 points as James Madison women's basketball team defeated Virginia 84-69 Tuesday night at the Atlantic Union Bank Center. The Dukes open the season at 1-0 while the Cavaliers fall to 0-1.
Jefferson recorded the eighth double-double of her career with 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead all players in both categories.
JMU used a huge third quarter to distance themselves from the Cavaliers as the Dukes outscored UVA 27-12.
How It Happened
- JMU outshot the Cavaliers 44.6% (29-65) to 41.3% (26-63).
- The Dukes shot 35.7% (5-14) from beyond the arc while UVA recorded a 6.7 (1-15) three-point percentage.
- JMU scored 24 points off of Virginia's 18 turnovers.
- UVA held the edge in points in the paint (44-42) and assists (15-3).
Statistically Speaking
- Jefferson also tied her career-best of three blocks.

Madison Green was the only Duke to record assists as she dished out three in the win. She also led JMU with two steals.

Jamia Hazell was the second leading scorer for JMU with 17 points.

Claire Neff added 14 points as she shot 75% (3-4) from three-point range. The forward added seven boards to her stat line.

Annalicia Goodman registered six rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.
First Quarter: JMU 22, UVA 17
- The Cavaliers scored 12 of their 17 first-quarter points in the paint and finished with a 43.8 field goal percentage.
- Jefferson and Hazell combined for 16 points in the first frame.
- The Dukes shot 75% (9-12) from the free throw line.
Second Quarter: JMU 44, UVA 38
- The second frame was a battle under the basket as each team registered 10 points in the paint.

Jaylin Carodine had a strong second quarter as she scored five points and grabbed two rebounds in seven minutes of action.
Third Quarter: JMU 71, UVA 50
- Neff erupted in the third quarter as she went 3-for-3 from the floor, two of which came from beyond the arc.
- The Dukes shot 57.9% (11-19) from the field on their way to outscore UVA 27-12.
- Jefferson chipped in 11 points while Goodman went 2-for-2 to add four points.
Fourth Quarter: JMU 84, UVA 69
- UVA opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run before the Dukes forced a turnover that led to a fastbreak layup by Hazell at the 7:21 mark.
- Virginia went on to win the final frame 19-13.
