Dukes Sweep Stony Brook in Season Home Opener

Harrisonburg, Va. – James Madison softball (4-0) swept Stony Brook (5-3) on the first day of the JMU Tournament Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.

Game 1

Stony Brook got on the board first in the top of the first by drawing a walk with the bases loaded to send a runner home. The Dukes battled at the plate during their half innings, coming up short until the bottom of the third.
In the third, Kate Gordon worked the count and sent one over the center field fence to tie the game up, 1-1. Sara Jubas was next at bat and sent a single up the middle to get on base, followed by Odicci Alexander reaching first on an error. Logan Newton drove in Alexander and Jubas off a base hit to give JMU the 3-1 lead over Stony Brook.
To open the bottom of the fourth, Gordon hit a homer over the left field fence, scoring JMU's final run making the score, 4-1.
Alissa Humphrey (2-0) picked up her second win in the circle. The freshman pitcher made her first career start as a Duke and struck out a season-high nine batters.

Game 2
To open the second game, Alexander (2-0) struck out two batters to help get the Dukes to the plate. She posted a season-high of 11 strikeouts in the 6.0 innings she pitched picking up her second win this season in the circle.

In the bottom of the first, Newton hit a single and then made her way to second while Gordon advanced home on the throw to give JMU the early 1-0 lead over Stony Brook.

In the top of the third, the Seawolves pushed a run across to tie the game up, 1-1. Newton started the fourth inning momentum with a single to center field. Madison Naujokas followed with another base hit for the Dukes to drive Newton home to make it 2-1.

Both teams remained scoreless in the fifth, with Alexander striking out a total of four batters between the fifth and sixth frames. In the bottom of the sixth, Michelle Sullivan entered the batter's box with two runners on and no outs. The outfielder hit a single through the left side to help bring in two, giving JMU a 4-1 lead. Jubas hit a double to center to drive in Sullivan and Kyle Thress to increase JMU's lead to five. Alexander added one more base hit and RBI to finish off the frame with the Dukes leading 7-1.
