Dukes Shatter Records in Sweep Over Rams

Harrisonburg, Va. – James Madison softball (6-0) swept Rhode Island (0-8) on the final day of the JMU Tournament on Sunday afternoon, winning both game in five innings at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes opened the day with an 11-1 win in game one before a dominant 20-0 triumph in game two to close the weekend unbeaten at their home tournament.

Game 1
The two teams went scoreless in the first inning, before Rhode Island broke the silence with a solo homer from Erica Robles. JMU quickly answered with a two-run home run off the bat of Hannah Shifflett.Â
The Dukes came alive in the bottom of the fourth, pushing nine runs across. Madison Naujokas got the momentum started by drawing a walk and then stealing second. Lauren Bernett followed with a double to drive in Naujokas. Michelle Sullivan then came to the plate and launched the ball over the center field fence for a two-run homer, giving JMU the 5-1 lead.

Kate Gordon hit a double through the left side that drove in Shifflett who drew a walk to get on base. Sara Jubas followed Gordon with a base hit up the left field line to drive in Gordon making the score 7-1.

Lynsey Meeks added the third two-run home run for the Dukes, sending the ball over the center field wall, then Naujokas hit a single down the right field line and Grace Lutz entered the lineup for the Dukes to hit her first collegiate home run, along with the fourth two-run homer for JMU, making the final score 11-1.
Alissa Humphrey (3-0) was in the circle for JMU and picked up her third win of the season. She pitched a one-hitter, striking out 12 batters to help the Dukes coast to the 11-1 victory in five innings.
Game 2
The Dukes scored nine runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Gordon started it off immediately with a solo homer over the left field fence. Newton hit a single to third, that drove in Jubas, who had drawn a walk and stole second. Newton then advanced to second off a wild pitch, only to be brought home off a base hit by Meeks, 3-0.

Later in the frame, Sullivan drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in Meeks. Hallie Hall advanced to first after being hit by a pitch to bring in Naujokas making it a 5-0 lead for JMU. Shifflett hit one to the Rhode Island short stop to reach on a fielder's choice, driving in another run for JMU. Gordon came back to the plate and bookended the inning with a three-run home run to make it 9-0.
In the bottom of the second, Bernett and Hall each hit a solo homer for the Dukes to push the lead to 11-0. In the bottom of the third, Emily Phillips and Kayla Boseman hit back-to-back two-run home runs. Madison Storey came in to pinch hit and hit her first base hit of the season. The Dukes pushed three more runs in the frame by drawing one walk and two were hit by pitch to making the score 17-0.

Hannah Hennessy hit a two-run home run, tabbing her first career homer. Hall followed with another home run for the Dukes, her second of the game pushing JMU to a 20-0 lead over URI.

Humphrey (4-0) was back in the circle to notch her first no-hitter and shutout, striking out nine batters to lead JMU to the 20-0 win in five innings.
